Science has proved that our Sun is a huge burning mass of whirling gases with tremendous heat. The heat is so intense that any object approaching within thousands of miles of the sun’s radius would instantly vaporize. The rays of Sun when they reach the earth bring with them the heat latent it them. This heat is diluted when the rays of Sun disperse in the whole atmosphere. But it is possible to concentrate the rays by a magnifying glass to such a point that the latent heat in them also gets concentrated so much that the object placed at that point starts to burn. In using a magnifying glass in the sunlight, what we effectively do is we trap the solar energy present in the sunlight and focus it at a point to produce heat. This principle is the basis of harnessing the potential of solar energy. This solar energy is present everywhere where the sun’s rays reach. We must try to trap this energy as much as possible so that long after the sunset, we can use it to warm our homes and hearths.
We may find the sunlight very pleasant to be in. If we continue to sit in the sunlight for a long time, we find our skin becoming hot because it absorbs the heat present in the sunshine. But since the sunshine is percolating every nook and corner where the sun’s rays reach, the heat is not felt easily. The heat gets dissipated with the atmosphere. That is why it is difficult to capture the heat in the sunlight to such a point that it can be put to use to provide heat and energy to its full potential.
To trap the latent heat in the sunlight sufficiently so that we can use it to warm our homes after the sunset, we need to use the principle in the magnifying glass, that is, we need something that will garner the heat of the sunshine and concentrate it upon a particular area. That something is a solar collector, just like a magnifying glass. It captures the sunlight falling upon it and allows the sunlight to pass through and into the area beyond it. The articles in the space beyond the solar collector absorb and capture the solar heat. The solar collector provides only a one way passage to the heat and traps it so that it cannot get back to its source. One example of solar collector is glass which allows passage of the sunrays through the glass and into container beyond it. The Sun’s rays making up the sunshine travel in straight lines so that once they are through the solar collector, they are not able to turn back themselves. Thus the solar collector effectively traps the heat energy present in the sun’s rays and the area under the glass becomes warm or hot. The articles in the area under the glass absorb the heat and prevent it from escaping back. Thus the area under the glass is heated by solar power and it remains hot for a long time since the heat is trapped there.
The greenhouses make use of this great natural solar collector, that is, glass. The glass walls trap the heat in the sunshine and the greenhouse remains warm long after the sunset or when the sunshine does not reach the greenhouse because of cloudy atmosphere. Thus the warm atmosphere inside the greenhouse is maintained even during cold seasons. Solar power is an interesting technology. People have been using products with solar power panels since they were children and don’t even realize it. Remember those tiny little calculators with the black strip. Whenever you held your finger over it, the screen would disappear. That was solar energy.
Those calculators are one of the most popular items that use solar power. But, these days there are so many more products that are using the growing technology. Solar panel works well because it’s a renewable energy, which means it will replenish itself after being used. The sun comes out everyday and people never have to worry about their solar panels not working. Some of the bigger products that use solar energy are steam generators. People use them to heat and light their homes. Companies use them to run machines in their plants. However, there are smaller and practical uses to solar energy as well.
Campers and hikers can benefit from solar energy and people who need emergency items. Companies are producing radios, lights and battery chargers that use just solar power. What is so great about these products is that there are many different types you can buy. There are some radios that come with AM/FM with a built-in flashlight. Others have AM/FM/VHF/TV. Imagine all these products and all they need is a little light to get started.
There are many companies that make solar powered flashlights and lanterns. These work great in emergency situations when you have no batteries or any other resource to light your flashlight. The flashlight will be charged during sunlight hours and then be used at night. In case you need the flashlight at night, there are some lights that have cranks to get them started. If you have a solar powered battery charger, you now have the batteries for your flashlight.
Other products include a solar power cooker. You can cook in the outdoors and never have to worry about propane tanks again. There are small portable backup solar generators as well. Solar power has so many uses that it’s hard to believe there aren’t more tools with it. Some companies are selling solar volt testers and vehicle cigarette lighters. These can also be used in conjunction with the solar battery chargers. The battery chargers usually come in 12-volt or D battery settings. The 12-volt battery can be charged to use coffee makers, stoves, beverage heaters, mini coolers, lanterns, flashlights, hair dryers, electric razors, heating blankets and so much more.
As research companies find new ways to use solar power, start looking for it on more gadgets. Currently, there are people testing solar-powered cars and boats. There have been test models of these made but none for practical use. Right now it takes too many solar panels to get the vehicle moving and getting a person inside of it. Solar power is a path into the future. As new alternative energy is discovered, try to do your part in helping the environment with these great gadgets. Solar energy is one of the renewable energy resources that are advancing as a way to get energy in the future. Of all of the renewable energies, solar is the one that is used the most. It’s clean, efficient and readily available. There are two ways solar power can be converted to be used in the mainstream. The first way is what you see on your tiny calculator. This is called the photovoltaic effect when light energy is converted into electricity. The other way to use solar energy is by heating a transfer fluid (many times oil) and combining it with water to create steam, which moves a generator.
These are both great resources and are being explored more and more everyday. However, not enough is being done because countries still rely on power plants, foreign oil and nuclear plants to get electricity. In the United States, there are more homes everyday that are converting solar power. In the western states where it’s sunny and warm year-round, a large number of houses have already converted. By doing this they are saving money on electricity and helping save the environment.
Solar energy needs to be explored and used further. It has a great number of benefits.
1. Solar power is clean. When using solar power, the only waste is steam from water and oil combining. This doesn’t create any greenhouse gasses and will help the global climate crisis lessen and maybe come to an end.
2. Solar power is readily available. Every morning when the sun comes up, solar power is ready to start working again. It can produce enough energy during the day that it can be used at night. However, there many commercial companies that use a hybrid for electricity. During the day, solar power is being used to heat the building or run the machines. At night, they convert back to regular electricity. Even though it’s not going all the way, it’s still a huge step in the right direction.
3. Solar has a wide range of uses. Solar power can be used for more than just electricity. There are simpler uses for solar energy that can help reduce the dependency on foreign oil. Solar energy can be used for cooking, all types of heating and lighting.
In developing countries, solar power has enormous potential and upside. In these countries, solar power helps reduce risk of injuries by reducing the use of kerosene lamps. This limits accidental fires and fumes being inhaled. It helps extend workdays. It improves literacy and gives people a chance to go to school in developing countries. This isn’t a technology just for the best and most energy-starved countries. Solar power is beneficial to everyone.
Solar power is very reliable, even on cloudy days. The heat of the sun won’t have as big as an effect, but will still do its job. The process is so good that solar panels are on the space shuttles. If NASA engineers didn’t think it was reliable, there is no way solar panels would be used for such sensitive missions. The idea of solar energy started over 100 years ago, but the technology hasn’t been as great as it is until today. With companies finding new ways to use renewable energy resources, solar energy is going to be more important. Solar energy is one of the best renewable energy sources because it is so abundant. We’ll never have a sun drought, we’ll never have to wait for the sun to pick up nor will we have to drill into earth like with many of the other renewable energy resources. However, to use solar power, we need solar panels. Solar panels are important because without them the idea of solar energy would be useless.
Solar panels work in two different ways. First there are solar cells that convert light energy into electricity. This is a little on the expensive side, which doesn’t make it as popular as the way energy is used now. However, they are found on a number of products. Space shuttles and satellites use them. Parts of these are covered in solar panels. These objects have the space for all the panels it would need. Another way to use solar panels is by using the heat from the sun. The solar panel attracts the heat and heats up a liquid with a low boiling point. This liquid is transferred to water where steam is used in a generator. This process is simple, cheap and effective.
Solar panels come in different forms and there is no exact shape for one. There are different versions of solar power as well. There is concentrated solar power, which is a sea of mirrors combined together to attract the sun’s heat. These are usually out in the desert and use thermal energy to create ways to heat homes, heat water and power machines. This type of energy is a little more expensive than wind energy, but costs less than photovoltaic energy, which is commonly used in households.
It has become cost effective to use solar power to heat and power your home. In the beginning stages of the production of solar panels, it took adventurous people to take a chance on it. Since the early stages, solar panels have been modified to attract to sun better. Different types of metal have been tested to see what works best. In the concentrated solar panels, which is also known as parabolic trough solar, aluminum is the best overall metal for its ability to attract the sun and sturdiness in an outside environment. The technology is getting cheaper for residents to use as the process gets more refined.
Solar panels are important to the evolution of the society. It is important for countries, such as the United States, to move away from the dependency on foreign oil and to use energy resources that are readily available. No one can deny the sun isn’t a steady resource. Even on cloudy days, there should be enough light and leftover energy to power homes through the day. More countries have to discover ways to use solar panels as part of everyday life. The problem is it is still cheaper to use fossil fuels in the short term. In the long run, solar panels will be everywhere making energy cheaper than before.
